Exceed is designed to please and to empower both casual and power users on your network. Exceed is an X11R6.3 compliant 32-bit X server that integrates the latest technological advancements like X Web (Broadway), TN3270E, TN5250 and Telnet emulation, along with ease-of-use improvements like wizards for installation and configuration.

Hummingbird has over 62 per cent of the worldwide market share and the industry’s most prestigious awards for Exceed PC X connectivity, earning the status of the Gold Standard in PC-to-enterprise software. Hum mingbird pioneered the simple approach to delivering seamless access from the Windows desktop to the many types of computing environments in an enterprise, including UNIX, VMS, X Window System, IBM mainframes and the Internet.

Exceed allows Intel 386, 486 and Pentium-based PCs running Windows 95 or Windows, and Intel and Alpha platforms running Windows NT, to access the X Window System. So users on a network can keep working on their PCs in the familiar graphical Wind ows environment and access remote applications without having to deal with the complexities of network computing.

Version 6 is designed to please and to empower both casual and power users on your network. Exceed is an X11R6.3 compliant 32-bit X server that integrates the latest technological advancements like X Web, TN3270E, TN5250 and Telnet emulation, al ong with ease-of-use improvements like wizards for installation and configuration.

What’s On the Multiplatform CD?

The ever-growing enterprise need not be concerned with outgrowing Exceed! Exceed offers scalability for future growth, providing users with an easy migration path from Windows to Windows NT and Windows 95. All three W indows products are provided on one CD, in one package.

Exceed Multiplatform ships with the following products

Full X Window System Version 11 Release 6.3

Exceed Version 6 supports The Open Group’s X Window System Release 6.3, code-named Broadway. Broadway provides the ability to launch X clients from within a Web browser, either across a corporate intranet or the Inter net. The key to Web-enabled X, or X Web’s success is that it does not require any specific code changes to existing applications.

The X Web architecture includes five key components:

  1. Remote Execution
  2. Universal Access
  3. Web browser plug-in
  4. Security
  5. LBX (Low Bandwidth X)

Remote Execution provides the mechanism to remotely launch an X application.

Universal Access is provided by integrating X11R6.3 with HTTP protocols making it platform independent, hence widely available.

Web browser plug-in works with Remote Execution and provides the glue between X client display and a browser. Currently the Netscape plug-in model is supported.

Security distinguishes between Trusted (internal) and Untrusted (external) applications. There are three pieces to security: an extension to the PC X server, a piece of code on the firewall and a security manager that interfaces with the user to authorize data exchanges between trusted and untrusted applications.

LBX was designed to improve the performance of X on WANs and slow dial-up connections. Techniques include caching, compression and short-circuiting.

The benefit of X Web provides the ability to centrally deploy and manage X application access while eliminating the costs associated with training users on the semantics of the X Window System’s protocol. Further, access to enterprise applicatio ns from a Web-browser is accelerated, as Broadway reduces the time to market by eliminating the need to re-code existing applications in Java.

Exceed Version 6 fully implements X11R6.3 (BROADWAY) and enhances security through administrative lock out of Xconfig and X Web security definition files. Corporate policies can not be overridden. The X Web Helper application adds the flexibili ty to include desktops with browsers that do not support the plug-in.

Xprint provides the ability to print from a remote application to a local Windows printer.

Advanced PC X server Features

Ease of Use

Hummingbird designed Exceed with the user in mind. We’ve streamlined and simplified Exceed without sacrificing performance and added wizards that are, shall we say, glitzy! That translates into low cost of ownership.

Xstart - Powerful Application Launching Made Simple

For users not familiar with the semantics of the X Window System protocol, scripting remote application start-up has been a daunting task. Learning which hosts and applications are available can be confusing at best. Further, command line structure and process management varies across different hosts and applications, complicating the matter.

Exceed 6 eliminates these problems and delivers truly simplified operation. Xstart, the most powerful graphical application for creating remote application icons on the PC desktop now supports host and application browsing. Applications may be discovered by users either through a well known file created by the system administrator (local or fetched via FTP) or through unique support of NIS. Exceed’s NIS support benefits large sites where central administration is crucial.

Additional enhancements include support of NT environment variables and macro embedding in Xstart command lines simplifying command line construction. Host password change recognition, via the new Telnet start-up method, allows a user to change their remote password from within an Xstart script. Automatic addition of Xstart scripts to the X server and Launch Pad menus improves productivity and eliminates the learning curve.

Flexible Password Remembering permits a user to enter a password once for a host. Association of credentials to specific hosts reduces repetitive input and eliminates errors. Launching multiple remote applications with Xsession is greatly simpli fied.

Xsession - Flexible Session Launching

Launching multiple remote applications has been greatly simplified through the use of Xsession. Version 6 enhances session start-up by automatically adding scripts to the X server Session Start-up menu and selection o f X server configuration files and window methods.

Exceed Version 6 Wizards Provided:

Powerful Administration - Reduced cost of Ownership

Unique System Administration tools enable administrators to configure and maintain Exceed from a centralized desktop. By reducing user and on-site intervention, Hummingbird Exceed provides low cost of ownership through automatic proliferation of consistent desktops enabling effective call-centre personnel.

Sconfig

Sconfig lets administrators pre-define the installation of Exceed and automatically distribute customized configurations, host profiles and Basic scripts.

Jconfig

Jconfig is a Java-based remote configuration tool which supports key administrative services such as Application Management and eliminates the need to visit remote desktops. As a Java application, administrators may execute Jconfig from any desktop with an available Java virtual machine, including UNIX workstations.

Jconfig Features:
